Alex and I headed to Vegas in September for a long weekend to attend the US Swim School Association Conference. It was an exciting few days filled with hundreds of passionate, private swim school owners from around the world. Everyone came together to share best practices on swim instruction & technique, drowning prevention, operations and how to deliver the best swim lesson and experience to each of you. We are energized and excited to continue to grow our impact in the community and are all united around one important cause - to prevent drownings. The days were jam packed with seminars, round tables and networking, but we did manage to squeeze in a few fun things along the way. We checked out the Sphere, lost the fastest $30 of our lives playing slots and got to see Cirque du Soleil before heading home on a red eye. Grateful for the opportunity to learn from the best in the industry and excited to continue to grow and serve each of our swimmers better everyday. Cheers! One thing we always like to emphasize at SLWM is the importance of consistency when learning how to swim. It truly is 🔑! When first learning, we encourage our swimmers to book at least once a week for best results. Increasing the amount of lessons per week can help to fast track the learning process if desired. For our established swimmers not looking for progression, we encourage booking once every other week to maintains skills. This strategy helps to ensure young swimmers do not start to forget skills they have learned. We often hear of parents pausing lessons during the school year and when they start lessons back up it feels as if their child is almost starting back from the beginning. Keeping a consistent schedule throughout the year helps avoid this issue and keeps your child water safe year round! Children under 6 years old are not fully developed enough to remember skills from summer to summer without swimming during the school year. We here at SLWM are always ready to assist! One question we often get asked is: Should I wear goggles during my swim lessons? 🏊‍♀️ There are several pros to wearing goggles during swim lessons! 💧Can help alleviate the fear of placing your face in the water while swimming. 💧Protects your eyes from pool chemicals and potential debris. 💧Allows you to see where you’re swimming and be better able to work on your swim technique. While we encourage our clients to bring in a pair of goggles for your lessons, we also make sure all of our clients are comfortable without goggles and practice self rescue drills both with and without goggles! Often times when accidents happen, such as falling into a pool, you will not have on goggles. This is why it is crucial to make sure our clients feel confident in their ability to rescue themselves whether they have on goggles or not. I did swim lessons as a toddler and started summer swim team at the age of 5. My family spent lots of time at the pool, lake, and beach together. Like with many things, the credit goes to my parents. 💧Why did you become a swim instructor? My first job at 15 was being a lifeguard. During that time, I got the chance to learn to teach swim lessons as well, and I jumped at it. I have always enjoyed swimming. Now, I get the chance to help others feel safe, gain confidence, and have a ton of fun in the water. 💧What do you love about teaching at SLWM? I love being able to have one-on-one time with each student! Everyone is so different in skill levels, goals, and the teaching styles needed. It’s such a joy to get to see what clicks and to help someone reach new milestones. 💧Fun fact about you! I speak Spanish. I studied it in college and was able to study abroad for a summer in Cusco, Perú 🇵🇪. I have also visited Puerto Rico twice. Have you wondered why we and other swim professionals say no to puddle jumpers? 💧They keep your child in the incorrect swimming position. Puddle jumpers hold your child in a vertical position with their head above the surface and their body directly below them. This is the drowning position. The consistent use of puddle jumpers can lead to children trying to swim vertically even when not in a puddle jumper, instead of the proper horizontal, with face in water, body position. Puddle Jumpers can also restrict arm motion making it difficult for children to do large scoops in front of them. 💧They can lead to your child forming a dependency attachment to the puddle jumper. If your child consistently only ever swims in a puddle jumper, they can form a feeling of dependency to it. This dependency can cause them to become fearful of swimming without using one. This can negatively impact and potentially delay their progress of learning to swim safely. What do we at SLWM recommend instead of puddle jumpers? 💧The most beneficial method is to allow your child to swim in the water with an adult while not utilizing any flotation device. This gives your child the opportunity to safely practice the correct, horizontal, body position while swimming without relying on the assistance of floatation devices. 💧If floatation devices must be used, we recommend using US Coast Guard approved life jackets. These are great for swimmers no matter your age, or skill level! Adult supervision is still a necessity even when life jackets are being used. May is water safety month and we want to help spread the knowledge so you all can have a better, safer summer season! ☀️🩵 Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4. Make sure to utilize all 5 Layers of Protection to help keep those you care about safe. 💧Barriers & Alarms: Ensure all pools and water areas are secured with self-closing, self-latching fences. Add on an alarm for extra protection to be notified when the latch has been opened. 💧Active Supervision: Always have a designated water watcher, no matter the age of the swimmer! When there are young, or inexperienced swimmers, make sure an adult is in the water nearby at all times. 💧Water Competency: Be proactive! Swim lessons can begin as early as 6 months old. Learn important swimming and water safety skills. 💧Life Jackets: US Coast Guard Approved Lifejackets are great for all ages. Make sure that no matter your age, or skill level, to always use a life jacket in open water. 💧Emergency Preparation: Learn CPR and how to do proper rescue breaths.
